Prior to 1984, Federal Screw Company had a subsidiary business which did research and development, manufacturing plus sales of early speech synthesys technology. This business was call Votrax.

Federal Screw closed down Votrax research and development before later selling the Votrax business. This occurred some time in the early 1980's.

In 1984 Artic Technologies was founded by Art Velthoven, Dail McDaniel,
Kathy Gargagliano and Tim Gargagliano.
These four individuals were former employees of the dissolved Votrax, research and development group. Art's, Dale's, Kathy's and Tim's vision for Artic technologies was to continue in advancing the research and development of speech synthesis technology, that they started at Votrax.
