SUBJECT: DEC Talk Express Version 4.2CB with Artic Products. Artic technologies supports the DEC Express with Business Vision under MicroSoft DOS. The Dec Express is also supported with all versions of WinVision as well as with all versions of MicroSoft Windows. This is accomplish by our screen access software which communicates either directly with the DEC Express or through the MS-DOS TSR drivers. These TSR drivers are shipped with the speech synthesizer. Depending on which beta version of the DEC Express software you own, Business Vision or WinVision may only support the synthesizer via one of the two methods noted above. Based upon current testing, we here at Artic feel that our software works quite nicely with the DEC express via either direct communications with the speech synthesizer or via DEC's own TSR MS-DOS drivers. This test was conducted using version 4.2CB of the DEC Express software. It also has been tested with version 4.2CD and has been found to work quite reliably. When using the Dec Express TSR MS-DOS drivers in conjunction with Artic screen access software, an additional line of commands must be added to the DTEXP.BAT file. This line corrects a DEC design change in how the number processor in the DEC Express functionS. These DEC Express commands are not needed when communicating directly with the speech synthesizer from within Business Vision and/or any of the versions of WinVision. Below you will find: 1. Step by step instructions on modifying the DTEXP.BAT file. 2. An example of what a modified DTEXP.BAT file should look like. 3. An example of a batch file for loading the DEC express drivers and then starting the Dec Talk PC version of Artic Business Vision. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Changes made to the DTEXP.BAT file. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Make sure that you are on the drive and are in the directory where the DEC Express drivers are located. Example: C: CD\ DTEXP 2. With your favorite text editor, edit the "DTEXP.BAT" file. Be sure your editor can handle long text lines. Just like this reference file, The "DTEXP.BAT" file has several lines which exceed 80 characters in length. These lines cannot be rapped nor truncated, but must be typed exactly as shown. 3. Arrow down to the line that says: dtstart "DECtalk Express is connected running version 4.2C. [:power interval 30] 4. Insert a blank line above this line. 5. Arrow up to the blank line and type the following: dtstart "[:punc pass][:sync]" 6. Now save the "DTEXP.BAT file out and exit your text editor. 7. Shut down and reboot your computer. These changes will take effect the next time you run the DEC Express MS-DOS TSR drivers and the DEC PC4 version of Business Vision. ------------------------------------------------------------------- EXAMPLE OF A MODIFied DTEXP.BAT FILE WITH THE ADDED DTSTART LINE. ------------------------------------------------------------------- @echo off dt_driv -r > NUL echo DECtalk Express in self-test, please wait. echo. dt_driv -c -i 4 -b 3F8 > NUL dt_driv -c -i 4 -b 3F8 > NUL debug < c1.dbg > NUL dtstart "[:punc pass][:sync]" dtstart "DECtalk Express is connected running version 4.2C.
